FengHuang
凤凰
In Chinese, FengHuang means phoenix. Just as there is a Phoenix in the USA, there's a Phoenix in China.
The People's Republic of China recognizes 55 ethnic minorities within China, and FengHuang is traditional city featuring the Miao people's ethnic culture. They wear ornate headresses and beautiful silver jewelry.
My personal thoughts though, it's a beautiful city, but it's turned touristy. What once had cultural significance has turned into a show. You can buy the traditional beads, necklaces and other jewelry. Culturally, I felt like I was visiting the 4 Corners in the US, and the Native Americans were selling their jewelry and beads as well.
On my first trip to FengHuang, I went with my Freshman class of students who insisted that my 7' by 12' room was too small. But, I persisted that it was fine because I enjoyed the small balcony overlooking the river. There were multiple gondola style boats along the river, and the gondoliers would serenade their boat's occupants.
